About Us
Our Commitment to Healthy Schools
Yoga has been associated with higher self-esteem, better behavior, enhanced physical health, and improved grades. Headstand, based in San Francisco, is committed to improving the academic, psychological, and physical health of students and teachers in Bay Area classrooms through the use of regular, simple, and fun yoga exercises.
How Headstand Works
Headstand introduces gentle stretching, breathing, and awareness exercises to help increase concentration, reduce stress, and contribute to overall physical fitness. Yoga helps students clean the physical, mental, and emotional slate and enables students to maintain steadiness within the KIPP pillar "More Time." Headstand's curriculum meets Physical Education Standards and is adapted by state. Measurement tools help administrators assess program effectiveness for budgetary and curriculum planning.
Headstand also provides teachers with sustainability tools. Teachers gain access to the same strategies students are exposed to in order to provide balancing tools for the long work day. Moreover, teachers learn how to use yoga tools inside the classroom to assist with classroom management. Students with severe behavioral needs are instructed to step outside the classroom to take "yoga breaths" when emotionally triggered, and re-enter the classroom ready to learn.
